Of all the friction points in uniform procurement, sizing is the most persistent. Orders arrive, sizes don't fit, exchanges happen, time is lost. It's frustrating for the buyer, inconvenient for the employee, and avoidable with the right information. Why Corporate Uniform Sizing Is Different from High-Street Sizing
Corporate clothing is sized according to each manufacturer’s measurement guide, using body measurements in centimetres rather than loosely interpreted high-street label sizes.
For example, a women’s size 14 Brook Taverner tailored jacket may not fit in the same way as a size 14 from a high-street or fast-fashion retailer. In some cases, corporate garments can feel smaller. In others, the cut, length or shape may differ because the clothing has been designed for professional use and regular workplace wear.
Checking the garment’s individual size chart before ordering is therefore much more reliable than selecting the size an employee usually buys elsewhere.
The Four Body Measurements That Matter
Most corporate uniform sizes can be selected using four key measurements:
- Chest: Measure around the fullest part of the chest, underneath the arms, while keeping the tape parallel to the floor. This is the primary measurement for shirts, blouses, jackets, waistcoats and other upper-body garments.
- Waist: Measure around the natural waistline, usually above the hip bones. This measurement is important for trousers, skirts, dresses and garments with a defined waist seam.
- Hips: Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat, typically around 20cm below the natural waistline.
- Inside leg: Measure from the crotch seam down to the required trouser hem length.
Measurements should be taken over light clothing or underwear. The tape should sit close to the body without being pulled too tightly. See below diagrams for details on how to take both women's & men's measurements.

How to Measure Your Team Efficiently
There are several practical ways to collect employee measurements, depending on the size and location of your team.
Option 1: Send a Self-Measurement Guide
We can provide a simple one-page employee measurement guide that can be emailed to your team. Employees can take their measurements at home and return their figures to the person coordinating the uniform order.
This is particularly useful for remote employees, field-based workers or teams spread across several locations.
Option 2: Hold an In-Person Measurement Session
For larger organisations, a short in-person measuring session can be an efficient way to collect consistent measurements across the team.
Once the process is organised, each employee can usually be measured quickly. This also allows any questions about fit, garment length or preferred sizing to be resolved before the order is submitted.
Option 3: Request a Uniform Size Set
For suitable larger orders, we may be able to provide a size set so employees can try on selected garments before final quantities are confirmed.
Trial fitting is the most reliable approach when ordering tailored jackets, trousers, skirts, dresses or a complete corporate wardrobe. It can also help reduce the number of size exchanges required after delivery.

How to Use Our Interactive Uniform Size Charts
Brook Taverner product pages on our website include an interactive size chart to help you choose the most suitable garment size.
Depending on the product, the chart may include:
- Body measurements for each available size
- Garment-specific sizing and fit guidance
- Advice for customers between two sizes
- Information about the garment’s cut, shape or length
- Conversions between UK sizes and body measurements
Always refer to the size chart shown on the individual product page. Sizing can vary between manufacturers, collections and garment types, even when the same numerical size is displayed.
What Happens If a Uniform Garment Does Not Fit?
We offer free returns within 14 days of delivery on eligible, unaltered garments. This allows you to return an unsuitable size and place a replacement order for the correct garment.
Garments that have been embroidered, printed, altered or otherwise personalised cannot normally be returned unless they are faulty. We therefore recommend confirming sizes before approving any personalisation.
For larger embroidered uniform orders, ordering plain samples or arranging a size set before production can provide additional reassurance.
A Note on Women’s Corporate Clothing Sizes
Women’s corporate clothing sizing has historically been less standardised than men’s sizing. Differences in bust shaping, waist position, hip allowance, jacket length and garment cut can all affect how two garments in the same labelled size fit.
This becomes particularly important when creating a women’s corporate wardrobe using garments from several collections. A jacket, blouse, skirt and pair of trousers may each have slightly different sizing recommendations.
Our interactive women’s size charts across all Brook Taverner products include additional guidance where a garment’s cut is likely to affect the fit. When an employee falls between two sizes, the most suitable option may also depend on whether they prefer a closer or more relaxed fit.
